Good News Friday begins this week with an athlete I bet you haven’t thought about in a while.
It’s entirely possible that Bo Jackson was the best pure athlete of the 20th century. He was phenomenal at baseball, and maybe even better at football. If he had concentrated on just one of his two sports, he may have been a Hall of Famer.
As it were, after a few transcendent years, he ended up getting injured during an NFL game, and was never the same.
But Bo is still doing good, this time for a great cause. Last week Bo, a native of Alabama, completed a 300-mile bike ride that raised $413,000 to help the tornado-ravaged communities of that state recover from last year’s devastation.
I also liked this quote from Bo; put a smile on my face.
“We’ve had fun this week,” Jackson said. “I’ve gotten to know people that I would have never gotten to know. And it’s things like when you’re driving down the road, even though these people have lost a lot, they’re out on their front porches. They’re out beside the streets and they’re waving. And they’re happy.”
Good job, Bo. In addition to all the other things “Bo Knows,” Bo knows charity, too.
**Next up, a story with one simple fact that blew me away. Lloyd and Evelyn Collins are a couple who live in Louisiana.
And they just celebrated their 77th wedding anniverary. Yep, they met and fell in love in 1934, and got married soon after. She was 21, he was 22.
Now they’re 100 and 99. Amazing. What’s their secret?
“Just take one day at a time,” said Lloyd.
Seventy-seven years of marriage. Astonishing. And beautiful.
**Finally, checking in with one of my favorite humor websites, OldJewsTellingJokes.com. Which is exactly what the name says.
I liked this one very much…
